St .de VERBINDING JOINS GLOBAL CAMPAIGN – ONE BILLION RISING – TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS
February 14, 2013 to be V-Day’s Largest Day of Action Ever
On Febr 14, 2013, St de Verbinding will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
ONE BILLION RISINGbegan as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, St de Verbinding will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologuesand other artistic works. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $90 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, reopened shelters, and funded over 14,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. Over 300 million people have seen a V-Day benefit event in their community. V-Day has received numerous acknowledgements including Worth Magazine’s 100 Best Charities, Marie Claire Magazine’s Top Ten Charities, one of the Top-Rated organizations on Philanthropedia/Guidestar and Great Nonprofits. V-Day’s newest campaign is ONE BILLION RISING which will culminate on 021413 with a global action worldwide. www.vday.org

Q. Why dance?
A. When One Billion bodies rise and dance on 14 February 2013, we will join in solidarity, purpose and energy and shake the world into a new consciousness. Dancing insists we take up space. It has no set direction but we go there together. It’s dangerous, joyous, sexual, holy, disruptive. It breaks the rules. It can happen anywhere at anytime with anyone and everyone. It’s free. No corporation can control it. It joins us and pushes us to go further. It’s contagious and it spreads quickly. It’s of the body. It’s transcendent.
Q. Why should I join?
A. To show the world that we want to end violence against one billion women and girls! By being a part of One Billion Rising we will all discover our solidarity and the scope of this issue. We will come to know that ending violence against women is as important as ending poverty, or Aids or global warming. We will come to see that it is not a local issue or particular to any culture or religion or village or age. We will come to see what is possible. When One Billion bodies rise and dance on 14 February 2013, we will join in solidarity, purpose and energy and shake the world into a new consciousness.
Q. How does my organization join?
A. If you are joining the campaign as an organization and want to host a RISING, please go here to add your event, making sure to register using your organization’s name and include your organization’s name in the event title (i.e., Women’s Way – Philadelphia RISING). This will make it easy to find in a search. You should also send us an email letting us know your organization is joining. We will then be sure to list your organization, along with a url you provide, on our partners page.
Q. How do I edit my event?
A. If you already have an event listed but need to change information, go to the events page and click on “manage your events.” You will need to sign in using the email address and password you created when initially listing your event. You will have the ability to edit your event title, description, location, date and time. You will not be able to edit your account/profile name.
Q. Why 14 February?
A. 14 February 2013 is V-Day’s 15th anniversary. When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women. Though we have seen many victories over the years, violence against women and girls is still prevalent. One Billion Rising is an appreciation, amplification and an escalation.
Q. What is the difference between a V-Day benefit event and an OBR Rising?
A. An official V-Day event is a benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues” or one of five other artistic events curated by V-Day. These events take place annually between February and April. An OBR Rising is a single-day global action, consisting primarily of dance strikes, which will occur on 14 February 2013. Every 2013 V-Day event will promote OBR, and we encourage OBR activists to sign up to host a V-Day event as part of their Risings.
Q. How do I sign up for a V-Day benefit event?
In order to produce a V-Day benefit event, you must first apply to do so at the V-Spot. Once approved, you will gain access to the scripts and many other organizer materials to help you bring a V-Day benefit event to your school or community.
Q. If I’ve signed up for OBR, am I authorized to stage “The Vagina Monologues”?
A. No. You must apply to host a V-Day benefit event and be granted the rights to “The Vagina Monologues.” Fill out an application by going to vspot.vday.org
Q. What are the guidelines to produce a One Billion Rising event?
A. Make sure you and everyone involved is signed up at onebillionrising.org Organize a dance strike in your community on 14 February 2013. Make it as large and disruptive as you can to spread the demand to end violence against women. Beyond that, the possibilities are endless.
Q. What should my first step be?
A. Gather your team. Reach out to other organizations and strategize how you will all mobilize your networks. Find like-minded members of your community to help you create a memorable event.
Q. Do I have to hold the strike outdoors?
A. No, we realize that some areas of the world will be cold in February. Consider public spaces like malls or trains stations, or rent a large space to hold your event.
Q. How do I pay for this?
A. One Billion Rising events don’t have to be expensive, we don’t need money to take action and change things, however we recognize funds are needed for venue hire, publicity, talent, etc. If you need to raise money look for local resources, whenever possible appeal to local businesses to donate their time and services to the cause. Work cooperatively, create strategies using social networks or crowdsourcing to co-finance, work with collective ideas or hold fundraising events leading up to One Billion Rising.
Q. Will V-Day contribute money to my OBR event?
A. Unfortunately, as much as we’d love to help, it would be impossible for V-Day to be the fiscal sponsor for the hundreds of thousands of organizers we anticipate signing up.
Q. Am I allowed to use the OBR logo on my advertisements?
A. YES, though it is not mandatory please consider using the One Billion Rising logo on all of your materials. You are able to add your own city/ country to the logo.
Q. What music should I play?
A. Choose music that will best motivate your audience. You can find some suggested playlists HERE. Decide whether you want a live band or a DJ. The same goes for dancing; decide if you want to hire professionals (belly-dancers, modern dancers, drummers, etc.) or keep it completely amateur or a combination of both.
Q. Is it OK if I rise alone?
A. Yes, whether you are alone, with a friend or with hundreds of thousands more, you’re making a difference. On our campaign website you will be able to find all One Billion Rising events in your area and join the ones that interest you.
Q. Can men join?
A. Yes, of course. Violence against women and girls is not only a woman’s issue; it’s a human issue. When we say everyone should join the campaign we mean EVERYONE.
